Ford’s new Fathom™ is a midsize electric pickup starting at $28,350 MSRP, with preorders opening early 2027. Faricy Salida Ford on US‑50 is taking preorder interest now.

We are going to be direct about this one. An electric truck at 7,000 feet in Chaffee County is an excellent fit for some people here and a bad fit for others, and the difference comes down to four specific questions. Those are first, before the spec sheet, because they matter more.

 

Four Questions That Decide It at 7,000 Feet

1. Can you charge where you park? With a garage or driveway and panel capacity for a 240-volt circuit, you leave full every morning and public charging stops mattering for daily driving. If you park on the street or rent, solve this before ordering, not after.

2. How often do you cross a pass? Climbing Monarch at 11,312 feet uses serious energy. Coming back down, regenerative braking returns a real share of it — and you are not cooking your brakes on the descent, which is a genuine advantage over a gas truck. A round trip over the top costs far less than the climb alone implies. A one-way run with no charging on the far side is the scenario to plan for.

3. Do you tow, and how far? Towing roughly halves the range of any electric truck. Physics, not a Ford flaw. Pulling a raft trailer to Browns Canyon or gear to a job site in Buena Vista is comfortably within reach. Hauling a loaded stock trailer over Monarch weekly is not, and we will sell you a Ranger or an F‑250 instead without blinking.

4. Where does it sit overnight in January? Salida winters take a real bite out of EV range, and an unheated outdoor spot is harder on a battery than a garage. Preconditioning while plugged in recovers much of it, because the cabin heats on wall power instead of battery.

If those answers point the right way, this is one of the cheapest trucks to run in the valley. If they do not, we would rather tell you now.

The Fathom can send power out as well as take it in. On a job site that means running tools without a generator. At home it means keeping essentials alive when the power goes down — which, between wind, snow load, and wildfire season, happens often enough in this valley to matter.

Home backup needs equipment beyond the truck itself, and Ford has not published output figures or supported home hardware yet. When it does, we will show you what a working setup actually costs rather than leaving you to guess.

Charging in Chaffee County

Honestly, this is the biggest practical consideration up here — bigger than range and bigger than price.

Home Level 2 charging handles daily driving completely. Public DC fast charging in the valley is limited, and both US‑50 east through Bighorn Sheep Canyon and US‑285 north are thin. Leave town with a healthy state of charge rather than assuming you will top up on the way.
